“What is counselling?“
Counselling is a talking therapy which is used to help people process and come to terms with the difficulties they are facing. The process of counselling can be daunting, but at the Hummingbird Centre we aim to create a safe, non-judgmental and confidential space to explore whatever you are struggling with. We offer 50-minute sessions, either face to face or by using video-conferencing (ie. Zoom or Microsoft Teams etc, that can be arranged weekly and for as long as you need support. They are completely free of charge.
What happens in a counselling session?
Your first meeting
There are a range of different approaches or therapies that can be used, depending on the issues you are facing and your preferences. In your first appointment, you will meet one of our Leading Team who will discuss your needs and pair you up with a suitable counsellor. Your counsellor will then be in touch to arrange a session at a time that suits both of you.
Following on…
Those sessions will largely revolve around you talking with your counsellor through the difficulties you are experiencing; but may also include discussion of other techniques, such as relaxation and mindfulness, to help you build a toolbox of useful resources.
Thoughts on counselling…
A counsellor will not tell you what to do. Instead they will encourage you to talk through what is bothering you, to uncover any root causes which are affecting you. They will then help you to create a plan of action so you can move forward. It may be that some of the other services available at The Hummingbird Centre, can help you to make progress on your journey.
Worries about counselling…
It’s natural to feel nervous about the process; however your early steps are always the hardest and it will get easier. Counselling is a journey, and it takes time to create a positive outcome.
