NEWSLETTER October 2014

As you already know, The Hummingbird Centre is run by volunteers and relies on income from sponsorship and other fund-raising events, as well as donations. We are extremely grateful to many local businesses and individuals who are supporting us by arranging fund-raising events and/or providing other services and goods needed to run the Centre.

Fund Raising Events During August

August Bank Holiday weekend was a busy time for Hummingbird fundraisers.  An All-day music and BBQ event at the Bell was well attended raising £1500.00

The KEA club on Ashdene Road, held a football tournament in memory of Jack Tingey late father of Andy Tingey raising £571 which Andy and the team donated to The Hummingbird Centre.

Bure Farm held an event with a local band and other eventful activities creating a lot of fun amongst the community within the area raising £170 which was donated to The Hummingbird Centre.

If you happened to be in Brashfield Road at the beginning of September, you might well have thought you were seeing things!  Fiona’s back garden had been transformed into an Arabian oasis completed with Arabs and their harem! A wonderful afternoon was had by all raising over £800.

By the time you read this, Naomi and her friends will have completed their zip wire challenge and our own ‘H’ and friends will have finished their 500 mile bike ride. There is still time to show support by sponsoring them at and

Meanwhile Sam Bowers is running not one but TWO half-marathons in October:-

“I'm running Blenheim half marathon and Oxford half marathon to raise money for the Hummingbird Centre in Bicester. I've already met some fantastic people through the Centre and knowing I can do my bit to help keep this amazing place going is a massive incentive to training and to complete these events The Centre provides care for so many people and I just want to do my bit to give something back”
Sam can be sponsored at

For those who like to test their general knowledge, come along to The Nightingale in Langford Village on the 1st Thursday of every month. Kieron and his staff will make you welcome and you will help raise some money for the Hummingbird Centre. The next quiz is Thursday 2nd October at 8pm.  Rumour has it our Founder Mechelle Harris will be the ‘Dolly Dealer’ that night so if you want to know what that means, come along and find out!

Our most recent fund-raising event was the Songbook on Friday 10th October at 7.30 for 8.00pm start. We were lucky to have Jacqueline Faye, a former West End singer performing songs from well-known shows and films and our own Ray Hendren singing a few also.

It was held in the Ex-servicemen’s Club in Pioneer Square, Bicester and we had a thoroughly enjoyable evening.

These events that take place help raise the profile of The Hummingbird Centre enabling us to continue supporting the people of Bicester affected by Cancer.

Always keep an eye out on our own notice board in Sainsbury’s where we will post future news and events.
