September 2019

September Fundraising – Two very different stories

WE WOULD LIKE TO SAY THANK YOU!!

Like any charity The Hummingbird Centre are no different when it comes to raising funds to enable us to carry out the work that we do, each year we have to raise over £90,000.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank those who supported our Annual Golf Event which took place on Friday 20th September @ Kirtlington Golf Club raising an amazing £9940 which has been topped up with a personal donation from one of our sponsors to….

£10,000 - the words thank you never seem enough !!
.
We would like to say a HUGE thank you to everyone who helped make the day such a success. We had some fantastic donations for our auction and raffle, hole sponsors for every hole, auctioneer, photographer, printer; and not forgetting of course the players themselves who dug deep to buy raffle tickets and bid for auction prizes.
We had great weather on the day and the Hummingbird Trophy is now in the possession of Julian’s Team, our 2019 winners.

THANK YOU SO MUCH TO EVERYONE WHO MADE THIS DAY HAPPEN

If you would like to join us next year the event will take place on 25th September 2020 at the same venue. More information will be made available on our website soon.

Cascais Half Ironman

Several years ago, my uncle was diagnosed with mesothelioma and sadly passed away after a short battle with cancer. Since then, I wanted to complete an event in David’s memory that would challenge me both physically and mentally. After not much thought or research, I registered for the Cascais 70.3 triathlon aka. Half Ironman.

At this stage, I wasn’t sure who or what to raise money for, but after hearing about The Hummingbird Centre and the fantastic work they do, I felt they would be the perfect charity to support. Seeing what David went through with his illness opened my eyes up to how much support patients and families need when going through these tough times and when I was told about the services The Hummingbird Centre provide purely through volunteers, I was really keen to help raise some money and set a target of £1,000.

So what did the event actually entail:

Swim - 1.9km

A 7.30am start in the bay of Cascais with 2,500 other competitors. Swimming in the sea with this many people, all trying to go the same way, was particularly hectic but I managed to wriggle my way through in 38 minutes and came out relatively unscathed.

Cycle - 90km

Wetsuit off and straight onto the bike for the longest leg of the triathlon. My bike compared to other competitors was certainly on the lower end of the spectrum and a mechanic even told me the chain was too old and ‘will probably break’ – not particularly encouraging to hear the day before! It turned out to be absolutely fine and despite battling up 2,200ft of elevation, it was a beautiful ride that took us up to Lisbon, through the Sintra hills and even on the Estoril race track for a lap. 3 hours and 21 minutes later I had completed the bike and just had the run to go!

Run - 21km

Bike shoes off and trainers on, I actually felt pretty good coming into the final part of the race and the first 10km went by very quickly. The run was two 6.5 mile loops and it was a real tease when running past the finish line after the first loop! This part of the race was in a way the most fun because of the crowds and support on the way round, which is very much needed for the last 10km when your legs are starting to feel heavy and the finish line is so close (but so far!). By this stage it was getting really hot and after 6+ hours I was dreaming of that first sip of beer at the finish line.

I finished the race in 6 hours 23 minutes which I was delighted with but more importantly, I checked my donation page afterwards and saw we had raised £1,505 for The Hummingbird Centre. With lots of charity events and fundraising requests these days, I thought £1,000 was fairly ambitious so to exceed that is so pleasing and I hope it will help the centre to keep up the awesome work.

Thanks,
Zandy
