March 2020

MARCH CHALLENGES

March was a good start for The Hummimgbird Centre, we had been planning our events for 2020 around November/December 2019 but at last we had been able to finalise our dates for 2020 and were ready to start launching them for 2020. Our fund raising events over the year have become very popular as we try and mix them to cover walks of life within the community of Bicester, surrounding villages and further afield.

The Hummingbird Centre Events for 2020
Masked Ball – March 20th
Summer Festival – July 18th
October 2nd – Golf
November 6th – Fireworks
December 12th – Light the Light

Everyone was excited, as we all knew these events have become so popular throughout the years and everyone would ask at the start, "Have you set your dates yet?".

At the beginning of March we received cheque presentations from Bicester Town Football Club, Mr & Mrs Ayries for their Christmas Lights display which they do every year, it’s not officially Christmas until their lights go up.

Team Hummingbird attended the Extra Mile Challenge dinner where they were presented with a cheque for their cycle challenge last September.  Our Hummingbird Team of 4 cyclists covered over 500 miles in varying weather conditions from the Loire Valley in and around the Auvergne finishing in Dijon in the Bourgogne.

No one would have anticipated what happened next to the world not just the UK.

Monday March 16th due to COVID-19, we had to temporarily close The Hummingbird Centre, a decision that was emotionally difficult to record but the right decision to make in line the announcement made 24hours later.

The Hummingbird Centre still pulled together and came up with a variety of ideas to still support our guests affected by cancer and living with cancer.

We reverted back to making contact with our guests by writing, social media, website, telephone, our counsellors continued to support those who needed counselling during these very challenging times.

All our events planned for March, July had to be postponed, with the possibility of the golf and fireworks following suit as well.

Team Hummingbird continued to pull together not only supporting our guests but each other as well.

Our thanks went out to our colleagues within the NHS and Care Homes.

Staying safe, staying home, protecting our NHS and the lives of our loved ones, friends and colleagues during challenging times.
