Café raises cash for seating pods

People who use a cancer support centre will be able to enjoy the indoors outdoors thanks to two new weatherproof seating pods.

Staff and customers of Bicester Bean Coffee Shop and Café, Windmill Nurseries, London Road, Bicester, raised more than £3,500 since April to pay for the wooden seating structures and garden work.

Guests are in for a surprise when they return to the Launton based Hummingbird Centre, near Bicester, as work is underway to transform the brick courtyard into a new tranquil garden area complete with archways, flowers and shrubs, a pond and water feature. The new pods will take pride of place in the new revamped courtyard.

Guests can now start booking for in-person sessions at the Hummingbird Centre which reopens to visitors on Tuesday, August 10.

The new pods were built by Oxfordshire based Lambert Home Buildshttps://www.facebook.com/LambertHomeBuilds and will be named in memory of Bicester Bean owner Alyson Clifton’s parents Joyce and George, who both died of cancer.

Alyson has been supporting the centre for about six years, and during the pandemic raised cash to help pay for Equine Therapy for children and families whose lives had been impacted by cancer.

Alyson said: “I’ve had the pods in Bicester Bean for over a year and I thought one would be lovely at The Hummingbird Centre. I don’t add a surcharge when my customers use our pods and instead I ask people to make a donation to the Hummingbird Centre’s charity tin.

“Everyone’s been so generous - the Hummingbird Centre is a very special place and I and my customers are very happy to support it.”

Like many other charities the Hummingbird Centre’s fund raising activities were severely curtailed in 2020 with income down by £60,000. It has survived by using its reserves to continue counselling virtually as well as pay rent and rates for the buildings.

To book sessions, volunteer at the centre and find out more about the centre’s new COVID-19 policy call 01869 244244
