New Accreditation for the Hummingbird Centre

November 2016 The Hummingbird Centre became accredited by Macmillan to run their HOPE Course, which was developed in partnership with Macmillan Cancer Support and Coventry University.

They are the only organisation in Oxfordshire accredited to run the HOPE Course.

HOPE stands for “Help Overcoming Problems Effectively”, which is a licensed programme that helps people who have had cancer to get on with their lives. Facing cancer can be tough; trying to put your life back on track can be confusing, unclear and sometimes lonely even though you are surrounded by family and friends.

The Hummingbird Centre became involved with the HOPE Course because they concentrate on giving guidance to those affected by cancer not only the person affected by cancer but the whole network as if affects everyone who is on the journey regardless of the outcome.

Those living with and beyond cancer face a number of challenges which can lead to feeling lost and abandoned during transition from patient to survivor.

Living with the fear of reoccurrences, depression, and struggling with isolation can be frightening and lonely.   Even though you are surrounded by family and friends who think they understand and can see you looking good on the outside they have no idea what’s going on in the inside.

The Hummingbird Centre’s HOPE course is free and looks at all these areas and many more over a period of 6 weeks from 10.00 am to 12.30 pm – If you feel you could benefit by attending there next course which takes place in May please contact them on 01869 244244 or email for further information.

Those who attended the course in November last year felt….

  • More confident in dealing with emotional issues, such as anxiety, anger, depression and uncertainty.
  • Discovered how to use relaxation techniques.
  • You don’t need to be afraid to achieve and set goals.
  • They could come to terms with their loss.
  • The ability to handle stressful situations.
  • They recognised their potential.
  • I do have a life after cancer.
  • It’s okay to look forward after my loss, he will never be replaced but it’s okay to look forward.
  • Gaining new confidence and friends, who understood me, being a man it’s hard to express how you are feeling as you feel the need to stay strong all the time.
Mechelle commented we felt very privileged to be considered by Macmillan for the HOPE Course, Michelle and Nicky worked really hard to be accredited, our success is down to them, we look forward to running more this year.
