A Bicester charity will give a nod to the 80th anniversary of the end of the Second World War with a 1940s style party.
The Hummingbird Centre is inviting residents to take a step back in time and join in the fun of the 1940s with music and entertainment by Sparky and Sprite, food and fashion. It takes place at the Highfield Social Club, George Street, Bicester, on Friday, May 16, from 8pm until midnight, and tickets cost £15.
Prepare to enjoy tunes from Nat King Cole, sing-a-long to songs such as Knees up Mother Brown and enjoy some 1940s delicacies including spam laid on by Bicester Bean Cafe.
The Hummingbird Centre, based in Launton, near Bicester, supports people with cancer and their families from across Buckingham, Berkshire and Oxfordshire, with complementary therapies, counselling, activities, Lymphoedema Clinic and a dedicated children’s service.
Bicester based company Huber+Suhner (UK) Ltd are sponsoring the event so all the money raised on the night will go directly back into running the centre. Mark Phillips, its Supply Chain Manager, who also heads up the company’s voluntary Corporate Responsibility team, said we focus on how we can make a positive contribution to our community. He said: “We are really happy to provide our support to The Hummingbird Centre as we believe it offers a great service to both people directly suffering from cancer but also their friends and family, who are also affected.”
Although the 1940s was dominated by the Second World War, it also marked the creation of the welfare state and the emergence of the Cold War. Big bands, swing and bebop jazz were popular on the music scene; while key fashion trends included seamed stockings, tight waisted dresses, two-piece suits known as Victory or Utility suits, bolero jackets and wide legged trousers.
The Hummingbird Centre founder Mechelle Harris is urging people to come along and consider dressing up in fashions from the era. She said: “This event is going to be great fun, not only is it a fantastic opportunity to dress up in 1940s fashions, but there will be fantastic entertainment from Sparky and Sprite and we can’t wait to see what Aly and Bicester Bean café cook up for us.
“Please come along and enjoy the fun and help us raise money to keep our vital work at The Hummingbird Centre going for the people who need our support.”
