A cancer diagnosis turns life upside down for any family, but when children are involved, the journey can be even harder to navigate.
That’s why in 2023 cancer support charity; The Hummingbird Centre launched its dedicated Children’s Service with every Friday focussing purely on supporting children and young people.
Based in Launton, near Bicester, the centre offers free support to people with cancer and their families across Oxfordshire, Buckinghamshire and Berkshire.
To ensure the centre continues to support young people in the best way possible, the team has carried out a major review and is now introducing a number of service improvements. One of the most significant changes will be a greater emphasis on one-to-one support, and to make these possible, additional volunteers are needed.
Centre manager Zoe Draper said: “We are appealing for qualified Children’s Counsellors who may be looking for extra voluntary hours. We would also like to expand our children’s support by being able to offer an array of alternative ways to support those who reach out to us, especially through play, interactive games, art, music or drama. Or you may have something new and exciting that you can bring to the centre and be looking for a unique and special place to volunteer.
“In return we can offer a supportive environment where every hour you work is helping a young person to better navigate the, at times devastating, changes in theirs and their family’s lives due to cancer. We would love to hear from anyone who can help and would like to make a difference to influence young lives.”
In addition to the children’s counsellors, the centre is also looking for a compassionate and organised Volunteer Team Leader to support and motivate its team of volunteers who are making a real difference to people impacted by cancer. This rewarding voluntary role involves coordinating volunteer activity, offering day-to-day guidance and encouragement, and helping ensure our work is delivered with care, professionalism and warmth.
